President Ramaphosa has announced that schools will officially be closed today Wednesday, March 18 amidst the fast-growing rate of COVID-19 infections in the country. The Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, confirmed that the schools will effectively lose 10 days due to the closure which will stretch just beyond the Easter period.
This shut down has not only affected South African schools but schools worldwide. In place of classroom-based lessons, online tutors have filled the educational holes which COVID-19 has resulted in. The reality is that lessons will be missed even though many schools will be sending schoolwork home with the learners.

Parents across the world have been seeking extra assistance for their children on the education front. Many learners do not have the ability to study and go through the work by themselves. Those who are able to do so may then learn and understand the work incorrectly which would also set them back. In order to catch up the school curriculum and not fall behind, we have the following solutions for you.
Tutoring Options:
On an educational front, we have a database full of skilled university student and graduate tutors, qualified teachers and remedial teachers ready to assist during this stressful transitional period.
We have informed all tutors to avail themselves online so as to further adhere to the strict social distancing protocols. We suggest the following platforms which are free of charge to both parties:
- Zoom
- Skype
- FaceTime
However, should you not have access to these platforms or should your child/children be too young to make use of this method, we are able to assist on a one-on-one basis as well, whilst taking the necessary precautions when going through to your family’s home.
The tutors have been advised to only get into their cars and drive directly to the home without making any unnecessary stops. We advise that parents and tutors agree on a hygiene plan during these encounters.
Our highly skilled tutors can work through any packs the schools may have sent home with the learners and they are able to focus on additional work so that learners do not fall behind.
Au Pairing/Childminding:
In addition to the educational concerns, we recognise that a large number of families do not have alternative options in terms of childminding solutions whilst the schools remain closed.
TutorBox can offer an Au Pair/Nanny solution. This candidate will be able to travel directly to your home for a temporary period and ensure the safety of your child/children and provide age-appropriate stimulating activities.
Should you wish for a live-in option so as to further limit the spread of COVID-19, this can also be arranged.
Educational Alternative:
Lastly, our vastly experienced team at TutorBox - consisting of a Remedial Teacher, Qualified Teacher, Counselling Psychologist and International Childcare Specialists - have developed Holiday@Home activity boxes which provide an alternative solution for your children while they are quarantined at home. The current boxes have been developed for Foundation Phase learners (Grades 0 – 3) with the intention to provide fun, educational and developmentally sound activities which your children can enjoy from the comfort of your own home. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to offer the full activity programme as normal. We have adapted it in a way which will ensure the health and safety of all parties. We will send the activity booklet electronically. Once again, our skilled Tutor and Au Pair candidates will be able to assist in the facilitation of these activities.
